Samia Dumais

Samia Dumais is a PhD candidate in History at Concordia University and holds a Master’s degree in History from the Université du Québec à Montréal. She works under the supervision of Steven High (Concordia University) and Funké Aladejebi (University of Toronto). A transdisciplinary researcher, Samia is interested in transnational discourses and ideologies of African descent and Black people, such as Afro-Marxism and Pan-Africanism, and their materialization in Quebec society. A member of the editorial board of the journal HistoireEngagée.ca since 2023, Samia is an archivist for the Afro-feminist community organization Harambec and an affiliated researcher at the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling. She has collaborated with the community organization Relais-Femmes, Ingenium Canada, and the Réseau québécois en Études féministes. Her research will soon be published in the Journal of the Canadian Historical Association.

Her master’s thesis focuses on the schooling and education strategies of Anglophone Afro-descendant community organizations in the 1970s: it discusses the Quebec Board of Black Educators, the National Congress of Black Women, the Black Studies Center, and the National Black Coalition. She demonstrates the agency of Black communities in Montreal and Quebec in relation to community and institutional education, paying particular attention to the perspectives articulated by Black women.
