Kathleen Durocher
Kathleen Durocher is a PhD candidate in history at the Université du Québec à Montréal under the supervision of Magda Fahrni and Laurent Colantonio. Her current research focuses on the dangers of producing and using white phosphorus matches. Her thesis, Documenter et éradiquer la « lèpre de l’allumettière » : la réglementation et l’interdiction de la production d’allumettes de phosphore blanc (1845-1914), explore specifically the diffusion and circulation of knowledge related to poisonous matches in a transnational perspective. Through this study, she is particularly interested in the influence of foreign knowledge on Canada.
Her M.A. thesis, completed at the University of Ottawa, focuses on the living and working conditions as well as the union activism of the matchmakers at the E.B. Eddy Company in Hull between 1854 and 1928. Pour sortir les allumettières de l’ombre, based on this research, was published in 2022 by the University of Ottawa Press. She has also participated in several projects to make the results of this research accessible to a wider audience and to contribute to the promotion of labour history in the Outaouais region.
