Brian Young

Brian Young is James McGill Professor of Canadian History (emeritus) at McGill University. His research interests are centered on nineteenth century Quebec history particularly the cultural, legal and social history of elites. His Patrician Families and the Making of Quebec The Taschereaus and McCords was awarded the Lionel Groulx prize as the best book on the history of ‘l’Amérique française‘ (2014) and the Canada Prize (2016) in the Humanities awarded by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences ‘for the best scholarly book in the humanities’.  In 2020, this work was shortlisted for the Canadian Historical Association’s François-Xavier Garneau medal. His present work includes co-editing a collection on the work of legal historian Blaine Baker and the writing of a monograph tentatively entitled ‘An Intimate History of Quebec Law: Civil Relations, Property, and Rights through the Lens of an Elite Family’.
