Jean-Philip Mathieu
Jean-Philip Mathieu is a PhD candidate at McGill University. His dissertation, supervised by Elsbeth Heaman, Don Nerbas, and Leslie Tomory, uses a case-study of Montreal Rolling Mills, a major hardware manufacturer on the Lachine Canal, to analyze the relationship between the joint-stock corporation and the formation and consolidation of the Montréal bourgeoisie. His research is supported by the Social Science and Humanities Council of Canada and the Chair in Canadian-Scottish Studies. A part of this research will be published in the fall of 2022 as part of the edited collection Colonial Metropole: The Making and Transformation of Montreal’s Square Mile. He was recently McGill Fellow for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine, offered in collaboration with the Museum of Science and Technology of Canada, and is a consultant with the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. A part of his MA thesis was published in Labour/Le travail. He is a member of the Canadian Business History Association, the Business History Conference, and the Canadian Committee on Labour History. His research interests are capitalism, class formation, industrialization, and the city of Montréal.
