Dan Horner

Dan Horner has been a member of the Montreal History Group since 2006. He has published a number of articles and book chapters on public life, popular politics, and urban governance in mid-nineteenth-century Montreal. In 2020 he published Taking to the Streets: Crowds, Politics, and Urban Experience in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Montreal with McGill-Queen’s University Press. It looks at how the urban street became a vital political space for Montrealers from all walks of life during a tumultuous decade in the city’s history. His current research focuses on Montreal’s urban fringe in the first two thirds of the nineteenth century. It examines the transformation of this peripheral landscape, how it was woven into the life strategies of both the wealthy and the poor, and how it served as a contact zone between a variety of communities negotiating their changing relationship to urban society. Dan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology at Toronto Metropolitan University.
